Thanks to all who contributed. What insurance companies do you use? My current homeowners doesn't even know if I'm covered - they've been "researching" it for days. Next likely carrier only provides liability on my property, no loss. Contractors insurance is very expensive if you aren't making money with the machine. So I am interested in who will underwrite. Thanks!!

I have American Family home owners insurance and as long as I do not have a farm and using the tractor to maintain my property my tractor is covered under my home policy. I didn't have to pay any more for the tractor. I have a 4600 JD with backhoe. It is only covered on my property though, I was mainly concerned about fire and theft anyway. ....

CalFarm provides a good policy. Today I called for quotes from State Farm and Farmers. Quotes are pending, and agents are researching. State Farm requires a separate rider for small farming coverage. ....

I was with State Farm for 15 years, really liked my agent and very happy with my coverage and price. Then I bought a tractor. Not only was I not covered, but they were not able to provide me with any more than $5000.00 in coverage. My agent found me another company the same day, who happend to be a friend of his. I am now with PEMCO, full value coverage, and just as happy as before. I have also added 1 more person to my list of golf partners... ....

I use Farm Bureau for all of my insurance. They provide me with $16000 worth of coverage for my tractors and implements for $87 a year. I have a $100 deductible and I'm covered for overturn, collision with stationary and nonstationary objects, flood, collapse of culverts, theft, all acts of nature and most importantly, RIOTS! And many more incidents as well. ....

Maybe it tis different in PA but my State Farm Homeowners policy does cover my tractor as long as it is on my property and not being used commercially. ....

Well, the saga continues. The agent I had has come back and stated categorically that the tractor is NOT covered by my homeowners for either loss or liability. Another agent, who deals with the same carrier, has stated categorically that it is: for both. I am still researching, but it would appear that much is up to interpretation, in my case over the meaning of "covered by department of motor vehicles regulations". The issue being do I have it registered (which I don't) or the mere fact that it can be registered. The messsage so far is that people (at least in this area) don't know how to deal with it. I will keep you posted and thanks for your input. ....

Checked with my insurance agent who in turn checked with underwriters and my JD870, brushhog, york rake,belly mower, plow, grading box, and gill seeder are all covered for replacement cost due to fire and theft. My insurance co. is Liberty Mutual. Incidently, they also wrote it into my policy and sent me a copy. ....

I too have State Farm, in Michigan, my agent told me, fairly quickly, that my tractor was covered for theft or fire as long as it is on my property and being used to maintain my property. Any use resulting in profits would void this coverage. They faxed information to my credit union, where I got my loan, and they were satisfied, plus I have in writing, somewhere, that they stated that it is covered. I think the key to the insurance is that it is not business related and like an oversize lawnmower. I think most places hear tractor and think you are going to be farming or a contractor. ....

Have owned equipment for many years and never considered insurance, but have never had a loss. Is there becoming a quid pro quo with financing and insurance like homes, cars, etc? Think about it-large successful companies "self insure" ie cover only high deductible liabilty. That's how I do it, pocket the rest. ....
